Meta Gaming (MG) - Complete Guide

CRITICAL: Meta Gaming violations result in: 1st offense = 24hr ban | 2nd = 7 day ban | 3rd = Permanent ban

Quick Reference Checklist

❌ PROHIBITED
• Using stream/video information
• Acting on Discord/OOC knowledge
• Exploiting UI elements/nameplates
• Using previous character's knowledge
• "Coincidentally" finding hidden locations

✓ ALLOWED
• Information from direct IC interactions
• Radio/phone communications your character heard
• Physical evidence your character discovered
• Witnessed events your character saw
• IC document/note contents

Definition - What is Metagaming (FiveM)

Meta Gaming (MG) = Using Out-Of-Character (OOC) information for In-Character (IC) advantage. Your character can ONLY act on information obtained through legitimate IC means. It's one of the most-enforced rule categories on whitelisted GTA RP servers because it short-circuits investigation roleplay and damages other players' arcs.

Violation Examples (Bannable Offenses)

1. Stream Sniping

Scenario: Watching TwitchStreamer123's broadcast showing their drug deal location at warehouse 47.
Violation: Your character "randomly" decides to check warehouse 47.
Correct: Your character needs IC evidence (surveillance, informant tip, investigation).

2. Discord Intelligence

Scenario: Friend messages "Help! Getting robbed at Fleeca Bank downtown!"
Violation: Your character immediately drives to Fleeca Bank.
Correct: Your character continues their current RP unless receiving IC alert (radio, 911 call, witnessing).

3. Nameplate Exploitation

Scenario: UI shows "John_Doe_47" above masked robber.
Violation: "Hey John Doe, I know that's you!"
Correct: "I don't recognize you with that mask on."

4. Previous Character Knowledge

Scenario: Your cop character died. New criminal character created.
Violation: New character avoids all police tactics from previous experience.
Correct: New character has zero knowledge of police procedures.

5. Forum/Social Media Intel

Scenario: Gang posts recruitment ad with secret base coordinates on Discord.
Violation: Your rival gang character raids those coordinates.
Correct: Character must discover location through IC reconnaissance.

Gray Area Clarifications

SituationAllowedNot Allowed
Recognizing voice"Your voice sounds familiar""That's definitely John's voice" (without IC confirmation)
Common knowledge"Gangs often use the docks""The Bloods specifically use Dock 7" (without IC intel)
Accidental visualIgnore wall glitch showing playersAct on positions seen through glitch
Stream delay10+ minute delay while playingAny delay under 5 minutes

Penalties & Enforcement

Violation Tiers

  1. First Offense: 24-hour ban + character action rollback
  2. Second Offense: 7-day ban + possible character wipe
  3. Third Offense: Permanent ban + hardware ID ban

Appeal Process

  • Submit within 72 hours via ticket-bot in #appeals
  • Include: Screenshots, full context, witnesses
  • Review time: 24-48 hours
  • Success rate: ~15% (only for genuine mistakes)

How to Report Meta Gaming

Required Evidence Format

Use a screen-recording program such as OBS

REPORT TEMPLATE:
Date/Time:
Your Character:
Suspect:
Evidence:
Context:
Witnesses:

Submission Process

  1. Type /report in-game for immediate flag
  2. Submit ticket in Discord #mg-reports within 24 hours
  3. Upload evidence to streamable/youtube (not Discord)
  4. One report per incident (no spam)

Prevention Techniques

For Streamers

  • Mandatory: 10-minute stream delay (see the streamer setup section in our GTA RP content creator guide for OBS configuration)
  • Use OBS scene switching during sensitive RP
  • Enable "Streamer Mode" to hide server/character info
  • Mute Discord during active scenarios

For All Players

  1. Ask yourself: "How does my character know this?"
  2. Document IC intel: Screenshot/clip how you learned information
  3. When uncertain: Choose ignorance over action
  4. Separate Discord servers: FiveMX RP vs OOC channels

Common Failed Excuses

❌ "I would have checked there anyway"
Why it fails: Burden of proof is on you to show IC reasoning

❌ "It's just coincidence"
Why it fails: Patterns of "coincidences" are tracked

❌ "Everyone knows they hang out there"
Why it fails: "Everyone knows" ≠ "Your character knows"

❌ "I forgot which character I was on"
Why it fails: Character separation is your responsibility

Positive Example: Proper Investigation RP

Day 1: Character notices suspicious activity at docks
Day 2: Stakes out location, takes photos
Day 3: Follows suspect, discovers warehouse
Day 4: Gathers crew based on IC intel
Day 5: Executes raid with documented IC evidence

Technical Tools to Prevent MG

  • CrossRP: Alerts when viewing streams of nearby players
  • Character Notes Mod: Tracks what each character knows
  • IC Evidence Logger: Screenshots saved with character tags

New Player Guidelines

  • First 48 hours: Verbal warnings only
  • Assigned mentor explains MG scenarios
  • Practice investigations in tutorial zone
  • Common rookie mistakes:
    • Using map knowledge from YouTube guides
    • Recognizing disguised players
    • "Accidentally" finding hidden stashes

Statistical Impact

  • 73% of ruined criminal RP traces to meta gaming
  • Average report response: 6 hours
  • Successful prosecutions: 89% with video evidence
  • Server health improvement: 45% after strict enforcement

Remember: Meta gaming destroys roleplay immersion—if your character didn't learn it IC, they don't know it.
