Record FiveM gameplay cleanly with Rockstar Editor, server recording commands, OBS, and cinematic setup tips for roleplay trailers, tutorials, and social clips.

Recording videos on FiveM is different from recording normal GTA V because servers stream custom cars, maps, clothing, scripts, UI, and voice systems into your client. A clean workflow matters. The best setup is usually a mix of OBS for reliable capture and Rockstar Editor for short cinematic shots.
This guide covers both approaches: how to record normal gameplay, how to capture roleplay scenes for trailers, how to use Rockstar Editor when it works, and what to do when editor clips crash.
| Goal | Best tool | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Full roleplay session | OBS Studio | Reliable long recording, captures voice and UI. |
| YouTube tutorial | OBS Studio | Shows menus, controls, browser windows, and audio. |
| Server trailer | Rockstar Editor + OBS | Editor for camera shots, OBS for live scenes and audio. |
| TikTok/Shorts clip | OBS replay buffer | Saves the last moments without recording all night. |
| Cinematic car meet | Rockstar Editor | Better camera placement and depth of field. |
| Admin proof/evidence | OBS | Captures exactly what happened in real time. |
If you are only choosing one tool, choose OBS. Rockstar Editor is powerful, but FiveM servers can use assets that make clips unstable in the editor.
OBS is the safest recording method for FiveM because it captures your screen exactly as you see it.
Start with these settings for 1080p recording:
| Setting |
|---|
Yes. FiveM provides access to the Rockstar Editor for saved clips, but exact recording controls can vary by client setup and server scripts. If the editor crashes, use OBS as a fallback.
Use OBS for long sessions and Rockstar Editor for short cinematic shots. OBS captures the actual roleplay audio and UI, while Rockstar Editor is better for controlled camera angles.
Crashes usually come from incompatible streamed assets, encrypted resources, broken cache, or clips recorded on a server that is no longer loaded. Rejoin the same server, clear cache, or use OBS for that scene.
Hide the HUD for trailers and cinematic shots, but keep it visible for tutorials where viewers need to see controls, menus, or admin tools.
| Recommendation |
|---|
| Canvas resolution | 1920x1080 |
| Output resolution | 1920x1080 |
| FPS | 60 for gameplay, 30 for tutorials |
| Encoder | NVENC or AMD hardware encoder if available |
| Recording format | MKV |
| Remux after recording | MKV to MP4 inside OBS |
| Audio tracks | Separate game, mic, and Discord if possible |
Use MKV while recording because it is safer if OBS or Windows crashes. After recording, use OBS' built-in remux feature to convert the file to MP4 for editing.
Use Game Capture first:
If Game Capture shows a black screen, use Window Capture or Display Capture as a fallback. Display Capture is less private, so close sensitive windows before recording.
Rockstar Editor is useful for cinematic FiveM footage because it lets you adjust camera angle, movement, depth of field, markers, and cuts after the clip is captured. Rockstar's PC support page documents the default GTA V recording controls: F1 starts recording and F2 stops recording in the normal GTA V flow.
In FiveM, the exact controls can vary. Some servers use built-in recording controls, some use a /record command, and some provide a small script with commands such as /record start and /record stop. If your server has custom recording commands, follow the server documentation.
Keep clips short. Long editor clips are more likely to become hard to edit, especially on servers with many custom assets.
Cinematic FiveM footage is mostly preparation. Before pressing record, decide:
For roleplay trailers, write a simple shot list. Five good shots beat 30 random clips.
Use this structure when filming a server trailer:
| Shot | Purpose | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Establishing shot | Shows the world | Skyline, MRPD exterior, highway, city lights. |
| Character shot | Shows roleplay identity | Officer at desk, mechanic in garage, gang member outside HQ. |
| Action shot | Adds energy | Chase, arrest, fire response, street race. |
| Detail shot | Shows polish | Custom clothing, phone UI, inventory, vehicle interior. |
| Community shot | Shows scale | Busy street, car meet, courtroom, hospital scene. |
Avoid making every shot a drone-style flyover. Viewers need people, actions, and stakes.
When editing a clip:
Good FiveM cinematics are not just high graphics settings. They are clear scenes with intentional framing.
Rockstar Editor is not ideal for preserving a live roleplay voice mix. If dialogue matters, record with OBS at the same time.
Recommended audio tracks:
Separate tracks make editing much easier. You can lower Discord, remove a bad mic take, or keep engine sounds while replacing music.
For YouTube:
For TikTok, Reels, and Shorts:
If your original footage is horizontal, do not simply crop the center without checking the subject. Reframe each important shot.
Try this order:
Editor crashes are common on heavily customized servers. It does not always mean your PC is the problem.
If F1/F2 or your usual recording controls do nothing:
/record command if it has one. Some servers bind menus, emotes, radios, or admin tools to keys that conflict with recording.
Stutter usually comes from encoding overload or unstable FPS. Fix it before recording important scenes:
For more client-side performance work, use our FiveM cache guide and FiveM FPS guide.
Recording public roleplay scenes can create privacy and moderation issues. Follow the server's content rules, especially for:
For YouTube monetization, also be careful with copyrighted music. Game radio tracks and Discord music bots can create claims.
That workflow gives you reliability from OBS and polish from Rockstar Editor without depending on either one for everything.
The best way to record FiveM videos is to treat recording like production, not luck. Use OBS for dependable footage, use Rockstar Editor for short cinematic shots, keep scenes planned, and test audio before the real take. If Rockstar Editor breaks on a heavily customized server, do not fight it all night. Capture the scene with OBS and move on.
